YOUTH / TEEN PROGRAMS
PROGRESSIVES :: Swim
Lessons for ages 6 to 12 years (35 minutes)
This program has been developed by the YMCA of the U.S.A. as a seven level
program. Each level will build upon the preceding one in order to allow
children to progress at a challenging yet comfortable pace. (Parents may
observe class on the last day of the programs session only.)
POLLIWOG
Beginner level for school-age children, use of
floatation devices, and front and back floating. Introduced to the front
paddlestroke, jumping and sit dives.
GUPPY (Able to swim 25 yards of paddlestroke)
CHILD MUST BE FREE OF FLOATATION DEVICES UNLESS DIRECTED BY INSTUCTOR.
Performing more skills without the aid of flotation
device, front and back crawl, sidestrokes, elementary backstroke, as well as
some diving skills.
MINNOW (Able to swim 50 yards of front and back crawl)
Refine front and back crawl, introduction to breast
stroke and diving skills.
FISH (Completed Minnow skills)
Students perform front crawl, elementary
backstroke, breaststroke, back crawl and side stroke with open turns. Introduced
to butterfly kick and diving skills.
FLYING FISH (Completed Fish skills)
Refining their strokes and increasing their
endurance. Introduction to Butterfly.
SHARK (Completed Flying Fish skills)
Improve strokes, starts and turns, introduction to
inverted breaststroke and increased endurance.
PORPOISE (Instructor recommended)
Advanced swimmers learn new stroke and rescue
skills, various aquatic sports and games.
