2010 – 2011
ANNUAL PARENT MEETING

 

There will be a mandatory parent meeting to discuss yearly expectations of students,
parents and dance educators, ideas for increased communication, the annual dance recital and to answer any questions you may have.

The parent handbook, which
will contain pertinent information needed for a successful dance year, will be handed out at this meeting.

One parent must be in attendance.

2011 ANNUAL DANCE RECITAL

DRESS CODE AND
REQUIRED DANCE SHOES: 

For the safety of all dancers and for the instructors to effectively be able to see body and foot placement, the following dress code must be adhered to.

Please note: Isotoner ballet slippers may not be worn during any dance classes. They do not provide the necessary grips to the floor and the child can easily slip in them while dancing.

Little Ballerinas: Any color or style leotard and tights, pink ballet slippers

Pre-School Combo for 3s,
Pre-School Combo for 4s
and Combo 1:
Any color or style leotard and tights, pink ballet slippers and tan tap shoes

Junior Combo: Any color or style leotard and tights, tan tap shoes and black jazz shoes

Tap 1 and Tap 2: Any color or style leotard and tights, any color tap shoes (color of tap shoes for recital to be announced in January 2011).

Jazz/Hip Hop 1 and 2: Any color or style leotard and tights, black jazz shoes.

Lyrical Ballet 1 and 2: Any color or style leotard and tights, pink ballet shoes (color of shoes for recital to be announced in January 2011).

Irish 1 and 2: Any color or style leotard and tights, black ghilles (Irish Step shoes). Black ghilles will be required for Recital 2011 performance.

Irish 3: Any color or style leotard and tights, black ghilles and black tap shoes. Black ghilles and black tap shoes will be required for Recital 2011 performance.

Cheer Dance 1 and 2: Comfortable clothes with laced up sneakers. No slip on shoes will be permitted. Anyone attending class in slip-on shoes will be asked to sit out of class for that week.

The Great South Bay YMCA Dance Studio is committed to providing each student the opportunity to learn the art of dance in a positive, structured and inspiring environment. Our team of highly trained and professional teachers can offer individual attention, respect towards each student and gentle guidance through the proper techniques of dance. We are dedicated to being part of the YMCA community by encouraging communication through dance. We believe in creating a place where members of our community are welcome to learn the art of dance that we add to the depth and diversity that makes up our community.

 

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Class times are subject to change due to enrollment. Be sure to check the website for updates.

LITTLE BALLERINAS (formally Totally Twos)
(Age 2 1⁄2 by December 2010)

Ballet class This toddler pre-ballet curriculum is a fun introduction to motor skill development and creative expression with an emphasis on fun. Class is designed to help children and parents gently separate. Parent participation required until child can separate comfortably.

PRE-SCHOOL COMBO FOR 3s (formally Terrific Threes)
(Age 3 by December 2010)

Tap and Ballet Combination class This pre-school combination class (tap and ballet) incorporates basic tap rhythms, ballet movement, patterns, and creativity while engaging in a social situation with other three year olds.

PRE-SCHOOL COMBO FOR 4s (formally Fabulous Fours)
(Age 4 by December 2010)

Tap and Ballet Combination class This pre-school combination class (tap and ballet) combines rudimentary ballet and creative movement skills as well as rhythmical tap work.

COMBO 1 (formally Fancy Fives)
(Age 5 by December 2010)

Tap and Ballet Combination class This combination class (tap and ballet) concentrates on bringing the student past the basics. Prior dance experience is helpful, but not necessary.

JUNIOR COMBO (formally Super Sixes)
(Age 6 – 8)

Tap and Jazz Combination class This combination class is a continuation and development of our Combo 1 class using our graded tap technique system. Jazz is introduced to this age level by building on their ballet experience and incorporating the current dance moves to the latest music.

TAP 1 (Age 6 – 8)

This concentrated tap class will allow the student to concentrate and expand their tap knowledge using our graded tap technique system. The young tap dancer will work on rhythms and combination of tap steps that go beyond what is learned in the combination classes.

TAP 2 (with prior experience)

This concentrated tap class caters to the intermediate tap student with prior tapping experience and continues to build upon the dancer’s knowledge of technique while challenging them to the next level.

JAZZ/HIP HOP 1 (age 6 – 8)

This introduction to the latest dance moves has been added to our program through popular demand. The class will introduce the young dancer to listening to the beat and syncopation of music through body movement, all put together to today’s hit music. Basic jazz fundamentals are combined for a fun-filled dance class.

JAZZ/HIP HOP 2

(with prior experience) This class is for the intermediate student with prior dance experience and will expand their knowledge of dance by incorporating jazz technique and movement along with the latest age appropriate dance moves. Time will be spent on strength and conditioning and more indepth combinations to various styles.

LYRICAL BALLET 1 (age 6 – 8)

This dance class will concentrate on the background of all dance forms and will focus on coordination, grace and poise. The young dancer will learn balance, control, strength and an appreciation for this beautiful art by learning to create a story or express the mood of the music and lyrics.

LYRICAL BALLET 2 (with prior experience)

This class is for the intermediate student with prior dance experience and will continue the dancer’s study of technique. Focus of this class will be on increasing controlled movement, flexibility and musical interpretation.

CHEER DANCE 1 (min. age 5) **Coming in January 2011

This class is for the beginner student. Basic cheer technique will be studied with focus on arm placement and beginner jumps. The importance of stretching and warming up will be taught.

CHEER DANCE 2 (min. age 8) **Coming in January 2011

This class is for the intermediate student with either prior dance or cheer experience
and will expand their knowledge of cheer technique. Intermediate arm placement and jumps will be taught with dance team flair.

DANCE WORKSHOPS (upon recommendation of dance coordinators)

To further our most advanced dance students, there will be opportunities to participate in Duo, Trio and Small Group workshops to get more individualized
attention and additional opportunities to expand a dancer’s love of dance. Student must be currently enrolled in at least one other dance class to be eligible to participate. Dance Coordinators will contact students and parents who are eligible to
participate starting in October 2010.

IRISH STEP DANCE PROGRAM

The Great South Bay YMCA has teamed up with a prominent Irish Step teacher to continue to grow and expand our Irish Step program, and allow our dancers to continue studying this beautiful dance form with us.

IRISH 1 (formally Little Shamrocks)
(For the beginning Irish dancer, min age 6)

This class is an introduction to the basic techniques and aesthetic of Irish soft-shoe dance, where the dancer will learn jigs, reels and more.

IRISH 2 (formally Leaping Leprechauns)
(with 1 year prior experience)

This class is for students with previous soft shoe Irish Step experience or with placement evaluation. Emphasis is placed on both individual musicality and teamwork in a non-competitive environment. The focus will be on more advanced steps, figure steps and choreography.

IRISH 3 (formally Reeling Jiggers & Hornpipe Hardshoe)
(w/2 yrs prior experience)

This class is for the intermediate student with previous Irish Step soft shoe experience who wants to further expand their knowledge by incorporating both soft and hard shoe Irish step dancing. This class will concentrate on figure dances, strengthening the muscles in the feet and ankles, triple timing and executing turns.

 

 

2010-2011 GSB YMCA DANCE PROGRAM ANNUAL TUITION:

Full/Program = $350/$450 *
Family/Multiple Classes: 10% discount

Program runs from September 13, 2010 through June 11, 2011. Schedule of holidays
and studio closings will be given out at the Parent Meeting on Thursday, September 23rd.
Registration cut-off date to participate in our annual recital is December 23, 2010.

Payment Options:

A: Pay Annual tuition in full upon registration with 10% discount through 10/25/09.

B: Pay semi-annually with 50% due upon registration and balance due week of

1/24/11.

C: Monthly bank draft September 2010 through June 2011 = 10 months.

*Our 10% family and multiple class discount applies to second child and subsequent classes only.

Spring 2011 Recital Costume Fees:

Pre-School Classes = $58.00

Single Class/One Performance = $68.00

Combination Class = $78.00

There will be a $40 NON-REFUNDABLE Costume deposit due week of Oct 18, 2010.
